How to Play 2048
This is a sliding number puzzle. Every move slides all the tiles on the board as far as they can go in one direction: up, down, left or right. When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one tile worth their total. After every move, a new 2 or 4 tile appears in an empty square. Keep merging to make bigger numbers and reach the target tile before the board fills up.
- Swipe on a phone or tablet, or use the arrow keys on a keyboard.
- Two matching tiles merge into one: 2 + 2 = 4, 4 + 4 = 8, and so on.
- A new tile appears after every move.
- The game ends when the board is full and no tiles can merge.

Choose Easy or Classic
There are two ways to play. Easy uses a small 3×3 board, and the goal is the 64 tile. It is quick, and a good way for new players to learn how merging works. Classic is the original game on a 4×4 board, where the goal is the famous top tile itself. Once you can reach 64 on Easy without much trouble, you are ready for Classic.
2048 rules explained
- Sliding. Each move pushes every tile on the board in the same direction until it hits the edge or another tile.
- Merging. Two tiles with the same number that slide into each other become one tile with double the value. A tile can merge only once per move.
- New tiles. After every move that changes the board, a new tile, usually a 2 and sometimes a 4, appears in a random empty square.
- Winning. Make the target tile to win: 64 on Easy, 2048 on Classic.
- Losing. If the board is full and no two neighbouring tiles match, there are no moves left and the game is over.
2048 strategy tips
- Pick a corner and keep your biggest tile there. This is the most important tip of all. Build your highest tile in one corner and keep it there for the whole game.
- Mostly use two directions. If your big tile is in the bottom-left corner, use left and down most of the time. Use the third direction only when you must, and avoid the fourth.
- Build a chain along the edge. Line up tiles in falling order next to your corner tile, such as 256, 128, 64, 32. Each merge then feeds the next one up the chain.
- Keep your edge row full. A full row along your corner’s edge cannot shift when you move along it, so your big tiles stay put.
- Don’t chase every merge. A merge that pulls your big tile out of its corner can cost you the game. Think about where the new tile will appear.
- Keep the board open. Merge small tiles early so you always have empty squares. A crowded board leaves new tiles nowhere good to go.
- Practise on Easy. The 3×3 board fills fast, so it teaches you to plan ahead. Those habits carry over to Classic.
History of 2048
2048 was created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli and released in March 2014. He built it over a weekend as a personal project, inspired by earlier sliding-tile games such as Threes. It was free and open source, and within days millions of people were playing it in their browsers and on their phones. The name comes from the target tile: 2048 is 2 multiplied by itself eleven times. You can read more on Wikipedia’s 2048 page.
Who is 2048 for?
2048 is suitable for all ages. It is a calm puzzle with no time limit, and it quietly builds number skills. Every merge doubles a number, so players learn the powers of two (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64) just by playing. The Easy 3×3 board with its target of 64 is a gentle place to start.
